Imagine holding two seeds: one from a mango tree, the other from a Baobab tree. If you've seen them before you know the mango seed is much larger, over ten times the size of the Baobab’s tiny bean-like seed. Judging by appearance alone, one might assume the mango holds greater promise. But does it? Is it really wise to measure growth based on the conditions at the start?

The Fast Ephemery Bloom vs. The Patient Giant That Lives Eternally - Virtually

As the years pass, the mango tree flourishes quickly, bearing fruit within five years. Its success is immediate, visible, rewarding. The Baobab tree, however, grows slowly, steadily; its roots deepening beneath the surface, preparing for longevity. Decades later, it begins bearing fruit, feeding entire communities for over 3,000 years, serving as wood for the village, not to mention other benefits, and standing resilient in the landscape.

The Lesson of Comparison

Comparison is essential for progress, fueling ambition and competition. But comparisons must be made correctly. Just as it would be unfair to judge a Baobab by the rapid success of a mango tree, individuals must not measure their achievements against those whose journeys started under entirely different circumstances. Misplaced comparisons lead to frustration, stress, and even failure, while understanding one’s own unique path leads to lasting success.
